Am I weird for kinda wanting a Pony? I know they’re objectively terrible cars, but, still, RWD 5-door hatch with Giugi aro styling.

Yes, wanting a Pony is weird unless you’re a masochist. The Pony was like a Chevette, but far less reliable. And I actually drove (but didn’t personally own) both in the past.

The Pony was a surprise hit when it went on sale in Canada in 1984. They were expecting to sell 5000 and ended up selling something like 25,000.

And the reason for the initial success is because (as you indicated) the style wasn’t bad, on paper the specs looked okay, they were CHEAP and people mistakenly they were like Japanese cars for reliability/durability (given the Mitsubishi-based engines).

By 1987, Hyundai’s reputation in Canada was shot because of how shitty the Pony and the Stellar were.

The Pony is rare today in Canada because most were scrapped within 10 years due to general all-around shittiness.

I haven’t seen a River 3500 in the wild for decades, the one pictured looks like it does not have much time left.

The Hyundai Pony next to a Mustang “Neighhhhh” or however you spell horse sound...
